Overwatch animated short ‘Dragons’ explores the game’s backstory

If one thing is clear, is that Blizzard Entertainment is behind some of the most played and best-known video games ever made. After all, the likes of Starcraft and Diablo became worldwide hits in the 90’s, and World of Warcraft is perhaps the best-known multiplayer online game in the world (and a favourite of quite a few celebrities too).

So it makes sense that Overwatch, the company’s new major game in almost 20 years, has plenty of gamers excited, and is surely one of the most eagerly awaited games of the year. A sore point though, is the lack of a single player campaign or story mode, as all Overwatch offers is competitive multiplayer play on a series of arenas.

The game does have a colourful cast though (and one female character in the game’s roster has sparked controversy even before the game’s launch), featuring characters like Japanese warrior Hanzo Shimada, and the cybernetic fighter Genji. And both Hanzo and Genji, who are playable heroes in the game, are the protagonists of Blizzard’s latest animated short titled “Dragons” (see video above), which explores the bitter rivalry between the brothers and what made them come to blows with each other.

The short does look spectacular, showcasing Blizzard’s flair for cinematics, and perhaps making some wish the game had a story mode of some sort. But at least these videos allow Blizzard to flesh out the game’s universe and make players understand what each character’s motivations are, in a game that looks like it could be one of the biggest releases of the year judging by the success of Overwatch’s open beta earlier this month.

Note: Overwatch will be released on May 24, 2016 (next Tuesday). Available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
