Final Fantasy XI was Square Enix’s first attempt at a Final Fantasy MMO, and was something of a mixed bag, even if it turned out to be a success on both PC and PlayStation 2. But Final Fantasy XI (which was clearly based on the online role-playing hit Everquest) did have several issues, mainly its inaccessibility, poor fast-travel system, meaning it could actually take hours for players to traverse its huge fantasy world, and tedious inventory management, amongst others.

Also, making progress was often a tedious affair due to the slow-paced combat and the need to find a like-minded party of gamers to tackle the game’s challenges. But this Final Fantasy game did have plenty of appeal for hardcore online RPG fans, even if the experience it offered clearly wasn’t for everyone.
