Resident Evil 7’s gore too much for the Japanese public, game toned down for Asian release

Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 already is one of 2017’s best games, a thrilling first-person horror experience with great action, engaging puzzles and visceral combat. This is a game that goes back to the series roots, and the return to survival horror instead of the third-person action focus of earlier entries has sure been welcomed by fans of this long-running series.

In addition to some bone-chilling moments, the makers of Resident Evil 7 did not shy away from showing blood and gore in the game, as Capcom’s game is also quite a bit more violent than the average video game these days…

And Japanese video game company Capcom must have thought that some of the game’s gore was a bit too much for the Japanese public, as Resident Evil 7 has been censored in the Land of the Rising Sun, with some of the game’s bloody action being toned down for the game’s Japan release according to gaming website Kotaku. An example of this is shown in the video below, and involves a character who, suffice to say, doesn’t have a good time in the game.

It is ironic, though, that Resident Evil 7’s violence would be toned down in Japan, while a game like Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is quite popular in the same country, but has not seen a Western release yet. This is because publisher Koei Tecmo though the game might be considered offensive in the West due to its unashamed sexism (which Asian audiences are perfectly OK with) but apparently Resident Evil 7’s gore is too much for the Japanese public though, which goes to show that attitudes to video game sex and violence are a bit different in the West and in the East…

But still, despite Capcom’s changes to the Japanese version of Resident Evil 7, the game will likely still be a blast for Japanese gamers, as Resident Evil 7 no doubt is one of the best horror video games to have hit the video game market in quite some time.
