3. Shadow Warrior

Shadow Warrior was an old-school shooter in the Serious Sam mould. The game had protagonist Lo Wang shooting hordes of enemies in his quest of finding the mythical sword Nobitsura Kage. This is a game that did not take itself seriously at all, and had plenty of funny one-liners. After an early and rather bloody battle with swords, Lo Wang would exclaim “chopping dudes to pieces again!”

Overall the game managed to recreate the magic of the early shooters such as Doom and Duke Nukem. But it also featured modern niceties such as a robust upgrade system, which allowed the player to improve his weapons, gain special powers and learn new katana moves such as the devastating swirling attack. The upgrade screens were quite beautiful, and obviously inspired by oriental art. Also the game’s sense of humour shows in the many fortune cookies scattered throughout the game world, which contained lines such as “there can only be Wang”. Indeed.
