These are the new Star Wars films Disney has in the pipeline

Fans of the Star Wars movies were ecstatic when Disney announced back in 2012 that it had bought Lucasfilm, and that new Star Wars movies would be hitting the theatres soon.

The first of these was J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, which certainly was a return to form for the franchise and a movie that managed to capture the magic of Lucas’ original trilogy, making moviegoers forget about the bland and boring CGI-laden prequel films.

This year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars History has also been a pleasant surprise, as it is a darker and grittier affair than earlier films in the franchise, although arguably it wasn’t as good as J.J. Abrams’ 2015 effort, which is still the top-grossing Star Wars film made to date.

Star Wars fans will be pleased to hear, though, that Disney has several new movies in the pipeline, starting next year with the eagerly awaited Episode VIII, which will continue the events in J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens movie. And it’s likely that Star Wars fans will be looking forward to finding out what’s next for characters like Rey, Finn and Luke Skywalker, who only appeared briefly in The Force Awakens and who will likely teaching the finer points of the Force to Rey in this movie.

Also, given the box-office success and great critical reception of Rogue One, Disney has other Star Wars spin-offs in the pipeline too, the most interesting of which will feature everyone’s favourite smuggler Han Solo, whom we already know will be played by American actor Alden Ehrenreich in this spin-off movie.

The Force Awakens and Rogue One were good, but Disney has more Star Wars movies in the pipeline.

Of course, it will be hard for anyone to match Harrison Ford’s great performances in the Star Wars movies, plus it will also be interesting to see on which part of Solo’s life this spin-off movie might focus on, although it surely will be exciting to see how he got to meet other iconic Star Wars characters like Chewbacca in his early career as a space smuggler.

Also, according to IGN, another spin-off movie in which bounty hunter Boba Fett will be the central character might still get made after it came close to being announced back in 2015, and this movie like the recent Rogue One also has the potential to be a darker film, and could feature some of the seediest characters and places in the Star Wars universe…

Additionally, there’s a rumour going around that actress Felicity Jones (who played the lead in director Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One movie) could appear in another Star Wars film, one that could focus on Luke Skywalker’s childhood according to The Hollywood Reporter, although this is pure speculation for the time being.

What is clear, though, is that Star Wars fans have plenty to look forward to, and if Disney’s upcoming movies manage to be as good as The Force Awakens and the recently released Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, then fans of the sci-fi saga are surely in for a treat when they finally hit the theatres in the future.
