The idea of a frustratingly hard game appears to be a forgotten thing nowadays. Game publishers just want to please their fans and create a user friendly experience. Games these days just let you relax and enjoy a good story, if only so that game publisher whatever can fatten its bottom line.

It wasn’t always like that, though. Games of the past like Ghosts ‘n Goblins did not pull their punches and would demand real skill from the player. So cheap deaths were common and gamers would toss their controllers in frustration.

This does not mean that the 21st century has not seen its share of hard games, though. Here is a list of games released from the year 2000 onwards that rival the classics of the past when it comes to insane difficulty.

10. Max Payne 3 (2012)

max-payne-3This third Max Payne game saw former cop Max in hot Brazil, serving as bodyguard for a Brazilian millionaire. The dangerous streets of Sao Paulo were a perfect setting for this story of corruption and betrayal and Max would sure face many tense situations throughout the game. This was reflected in the games’ difficulty, which in many places was hard as hell. This is one game that did not hold your hand at all: taking cover and hoping for the best was out of the question, because enemies would flank you or throw grenades at you. Even with slow motion bullet time, the action was intense and fast-paced and many times you would go down without knowing what hit you.
