2. The Polygon Doom video and should reviewers be good at games?

There was much controversy regarding Polygon’s review of Doom this year, despite the fact that the well-known video game website gave Bethesda’s game a solid 8.5 out of 10 score. This was due to a gameplay video featured on the site, which left many gamers dumbstruck due to the apparent lack of gaming competency of the Polygon reviewer, who seemed to have the playing skills of a four year old…

This led to Polygon’s piece being showered with negative comments from upset video game fans, and a controversy arose about how good video game reviewers should be at playing games. Because clearly the average reviewer who earns a living writing about games should not necessarily have the skills of a pro-gamer, but at least should be able to match the average gamer when it comes to playing video games, even if some would argue that reviewers sucking at games is not an industry malaise at all… But still, when an outlet like Polygon disses superb video games like The Last of Us due to their difficulty, perhaps it might be time for some to brush up on their gaming skills…
