7. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

Hotline Miami’s controversial sex scene got the game banned in Australia.

This indie game by Dennaton Games has been controversial not only due to its gory violence, but due to its sexual content. The game features a simulated rape scene, in which an actor, who plays the role of the first game’s protagonist Jacket, sexually assaults a woman in a red dress before murdering her. At some point in the scene the director even berates the guy for not being brutal enough.

And while the game’s cartoonish 2D graphics make the whole thing look a bit silly, the censors in Australia took issue with it, as the game was banned there. And while video game censorship is pointless, as it is based on the dubious relationship between real-world violence and video game violence, the scene is question is rather tasteless and certainly doesn’t add much to the game, except bring free publicity to its creators.
