Ubisoft has new logo, explains reasoning behind it

Few gamers haven’t heard of Ubisoft, the renowned French video game company which is behind franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Rayman. And it’s likely most are familiar with the company’s current logo, which it adopted back in 2003, when it began putting out more adult-oriented games like the Tom Clancy games.

But times have moved on, and since Ubisoft has now branched into the movie business with its Ubisoft Motion Pictures studio and last year’s Assassin’s Creed movie, the company has now felt the need to change its logo once more, as it revealed in a recent blog post.

So it’s goodbye to the purple-bluish logo we have gotten used to seeing in Ubi’s games to date, as it will be replaced with a “minimalist, modern and monochromatic” version.

According to Ubisoft, this new logo is “a window into our worlds, giving a preview of what’s to come by highlighting the artistry that goes into creating them. The swirl and the letter O are both deliberately created to be reminiscent of hand-drawn shapes and represent our human qualities of enthusiasm, curiosity and the grain de folie that Ubisoft is known for”.

This logo change does feel justified, taking into account that Ubisoft is more than a games company these days – as the French powerhouse itself put it, “today, we create worlds – worlds that live as video games, comics, movies, TV shows, books, and amusement park rides”.

Of course, no matter how big Ubisoft has become over the years, it recently has had to fend off the threat of media company Vivendi, which has shown an interest in buying the French video game publisher. Vivendi has been buying Ubisoft’s shares at a steady pace for some time now, and it’s clear that being acquired by a massive media conglomerate would be a big threat to Ubisoft’s independence, as CEO Yves Guillemot himself admitted in an interview.

So here’s hoping Ubisoft remains on the right track and keeps putting out huge games for players worldwide to enjoy, in a year that looks like it could be a great one for the French games company. Actually, Ubisoft has already released games like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands in 2017, and also announced new entries in some of its top franchises like Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed, the latter of which could be out this fall.
