You might recall director Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man movie from 2015. Actually, this was arguably the top superhero movie of the year, featuring great action, special effects and great performances from Michael Douglas and lead actor Paul Ruud.
But perhaps you might not know that director Edgar Wright was originally attached to the project, being the man initially chosen by Marvel to helm the superhero movie. The Edgar Wright name might ring a bell as he’s behind movies like Hot Fuzz, The World’s End and Baby Driver, with his latest flick doing quite well at the box office too.
Wright, however, is not fond of Ant-Man, despite the movie getting great reviews and having been a solid box office hit back in 2015.
So, is director Edgar Wright resentful at Marvel Studios for booting him from the movie? Does he bear any ill feelings against the man who finally got to direct and turn Ant-Man into a success, Peyton Reed?
Wright did not get to say as much in an interview with Uproxx (via GameSpot), although he made it clear he has no intention of watching the Marvel movie.
“I haven’t seen it and I haven’t even seen the trailer. It would kind of like be asking me, ‘Do you want to watch your ex-girlfriend have sex?’ Like, ‘No, I’m good.’”, said Wright.
However, the man did come close to catching a glimpse of the movie when he was on a plane, as an unsuspecting passenger happened to be enjoying the flick during a flight. A this might have been a cruel form of torture for Wright, no doubt…
This doesn’t mean the director bears ill feelings against the people behind Ant-Man, and admitted in the interview he’s not into “bad-mouthing it”, also adding that he and Paul Rudd (that movie’s lead actor) are “still very good friends”.
“And in fact, I saw him in New York the other week and we had dinner and it was the first time we’d had a chance to properly sit down since that whole thing. And the one thing I’ll say about that movie is I’m pleased that I got a writing credit on it, because it sort of makes up for having worked on the script for like eight years”, Wright told Uproxx.
He also gets along with the man who would take his place directing Ant-Man, Peyton Reed, with Wright saying in the interview that “he e-mailed me for the first time in nearly three years to say congrats on Baby Driver and that he couldn’t wait to see it, which he didn’t need to do. It was a nice e-mail to receive”.
Here’s hoping though, that despite not getting to helm Ant-Man in the end Edgar Wright continues to find success in Hollywood with projects like Baby Driver and other movies. And who knows, maybe someday the director will get to work in another superhero movie that delights audiences worldwide in the future.
