BioWare was one of the better-known video game developers in the world, no question. BioWare’s games like Baldur’s Gate and Mass Effect set the world on fire, gathering millions of fans who enjoyed their deep stories, characters and fun gameplay. But sadly BioWare was shuttered last month by Electronic Arts, shortly after the Canadian publisher was acquired by a middle-eastern business consortium… Nonetheless, BioWare’s games will live in gamers’ memories for a long time to come. So without further ado, here follows a list of the top 5 games BioWare made during its 30-year tenure.
5. Baldur’s Gate
BioWare surprised everyone with Baldur’s Gate back in 1998. A colorful role-playing game that made the complicated Dungeons and Dragons rules accessible for the average gamer, it made point and click RPGs a thing on PC. And this was a great game. Playing as a young orphan raised in the fortress of Candlekeep was engaging throughout, even if some of the dialogue is laughable by today’s standards. The text and the voice acting would differ sometimes too, which was puzzling…
Nonetheless, little details such as the way your wizards and mages waved their hands in the air before casting a spell, and the spell animations themselves, were great too. Of course, the isometric graphics look quite dated by today’s standards, even if they were stunning back then. Also, the game is overshadowed by its glorious sequel. But still, defeating villain Sarevok at the end of it all surely was rewarding, and this is a game that influenced almost every other RPG that came after.
Release date: November 1998 (original), November 2012 (enhanced edition). Available on PC, iOS, Android, other platforms.
