The top most controversial games of 2025

A plethora of games have been released in 2025, and some have been controversial. There has been more than one divisive controversy involving video games this year, be it a PS5 exclusive not coming to PC for dubious reasons or a remaster of a classic game not looking good enough. Here follows a list of the top most controversial games of 2025.

Days Gone Remastered

Days Gone was one of the top-selling games of the PS4 era, a zombie open-world game which surprised many due to it featuring a large number of undead enemies onscreen (or “freakers” as they were known in the game). It sold millions but never got a sequel, and did generate some controversy back in the day due to, amongst other things, the lack of diversity of the game’s cast.

And Days Gone Remastered has also been controversial in 2025 due to other reasons. The remaster being digital only annoyed some, but the lack of an upgrade path for some users was jarring for many… You see, those who had the game on PS Plus couldn’t upgrade to the remastered edition (a $10 US dollar upgrade) but had to pay full price instead if they wanted to get hold of it. The remaster improves the game’s graphics, featured DualSense haptic feedback support and includes new gameplay modes amongst other things, so it’s hard to say it’s a must have, especially considering Days Gone has had a PS5 patch which improves its looks and performance on Sony’s current-gen console. But still, some would say Days Gone not getting a sequel despite selling millions is one of the biggest video game controversies to date too…

Code Violet

It’s likely many are looking forward to Code Violet, a third-person action and horror game inspired by the Dino Crisis games. It also features a sexy protagonist named Violet Sinclair, who’s been abducted and taken to a bioengineering laboratory to be used as a surrogate in order to prevent mankind’s extinction. The lab is also full of hostile humans and dinosaurs for some reason…

Of course, the game’s plot is as silly as it gets. Also silly (and controversial) were the reasons given by US studio TeamKill Media for not bringing their PS5 exclusive to PC. This had to do with their fear of people “modding vulgar versions of the main character”. And although vulgar and sex mods exist for PC games, this did not prevent games like Final Fantasy 15 from getting a PC version, even though that game’s publisher Square Enix voiced similar concerns in the past. But maybe some will think it’s not a big deal that the studio behind Code Violet is skipping PC, as their earlier game Quantum Error (a survival horror game involving firefighters) wasn’t exactly a masterpiece… That one is apparently planned for PC, so maybe Dino Crisis-inspired Code Violet could hit the platform one day, when we’ll already know if the controversy surrounding it has done TeamKill Media any good.
