4. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor was an unexpected hit in 2014 and ended up being one of the best video games of the year. The game featured an original story set in the Lord of the Rings universe, in which protagonist Talion and his family are murdered by an invading orc force, with Talion returning as a vengeful spirit eager to teach the orcs and Uruks a lesson.

The game had superb combat and an interesting “Nemesis” system in which enemies who managed to defeat the player would come back stronger and rise in the orc hierarchy, adding an interesting twist to the proceedings. Shadow of Mordor also had some pretty great visuals, with detailed character models, ruined forts and towers, plus the desolate and oppressive landscapes of Mordor sure looked superb in Warner Bros’ 2014 game. And a recent patch updated Shadow of Mordor to offer better visuals on the PS4 Pro, offering a better experience for owners of Sony’s new console too.
