BAFTA might be well known for giving awards to movies and TV series each year, but the British Academy also honours the best games of the previous year in a ceremony held in London every year. And 2019 will be no different, with BAFTA giving awards to the best video games of 2018 on April 4.
Leading the nominees is Sony studios’ God of War, which could pick up a total of seven awards come April the 4th this year. As expected, the PS4 exclusive is nominated for best game too, and will be competing in this category with Red Dead Redemption 2, Return of the Obra Dinn and Ubisoft’s epic Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, amongst others.
Rockstar’s cowboy adventure Red Dead Redemption 2 is the other game which could win big during the BAFTA Games Awards this year with a total of six nominations. Aside from best game, it’s also nominated in the Best British Game, Audio Achievement, Narrative and other categories.
Also, Return of the Obra Dinn is a nominee in six categories. This is not surprising taking into account this indie game by veteran designer Lucas Pope left many people speechless last year due to its clever puzzles and original aesthetic. But will Obra Dinn be able to edge out the likes of God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 and scoop up the Best Game award at the BAFTAs this year? This remains to be seen.
Aside from these games, one of last year’s top action and adventure games could pick up awards at this year’s BAFTA ceremony, as Marvel’s Spider-Man has been nominated in three categories for this year’s BAFTA Games Awards ceremony.
