The latest top-selling video game list by the NPD Group reveals that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Capcom’s latest entry in its award-winning horror franchise, is the best-selling game for the month of January 2017 in the US.
And surely this is a game that deserves to sell well, as this latest Resident Evil instalment was praised for returning to the series’ survival horror roots, while also offering a superb first-person horror experience to fans of the long-running franchise. The game wasn’t without its flaws though, and while it has been the US’ top-selling game this January, the truth is that it might have failed to meet Capcom’s sales expectations, even if it is still a strong release overall.
Coming at number two is Activision’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, the latest instalment of the world-conquering military shooter franchise. And Infinite Warfare continues to be a strong-seller after topping the US sales chart last year, despite the fact that Activision itself admitted that the latest Call of Duty had failed to resonate with fans due to its sci-fi setting, and that the series would be going “back to its roots” with the next instalment.
Other games like GTA V (number 3) also feature in this top-sellers list for January 2017, which surely is impressive taking into account that the game was originally released back in 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. But Rockstar’s game has proven to be a solid performer over the years, and this is likely due to the appeal of GTA Online, its wildly successful multiplayer online component which reportedly had made a ton of money for the video game company to date.
Also, it appears another GTA-style game is also doing quite well when it comes to sales, as Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2 comes in at number 8 on the list, proving gamers have an appetite for this sort of open-world video game no doubt.
Other well-known video game franchises like Madden and FIFA also make the list at numbers 7 and 10, while looking at the platform-specific top-sellers list for January 2017 we see that games like Final Fantasy XV (PS4) and Titanfall 2 (Xbox One) did quite well this January, despite not making the overall sales list.
So hopefully this will be a year in which not only the mayor video game franchises will get to shine, but also hot upcoming video games like Horizon: Zero Dawn and others like the promising Nier: Automata are well-received by video game fans, in a year that could turn out to be one of the best for gaming yet.
