The top 5 most disappointing games of 2025

2. Civilization VII

The Civilization series has been the gold standard when it comes to “4X” strategy games, so it makes sense fans had high hopes for this new entry in Sid Meier’s long-running franchise. However, unlike the previous Civilization game (part VI, which was deep and complex upon release), this entry was something of a barebones game, with a simplified interface that did not provide quite enough detail about the state of your empire and what was going on.

Also, the “age transition” gameplay mechanic was controversial, as you had to take control of a different civilization once the current age (antiquity, exploration and modern) came to an end, breaking continuity. This is a game that continues to evolve, though, and patches and updates have improved the experience, with the latest making the naval aspects of the game more interesting for those who wish to rule the high seas. But that Civilization VII was a disappointment at launch can’t be denied nonetheless.
