The New Assassin’s Creed Game Might Come out Sooner than You Expect

Although many fans of Ubisoft’s renowned Assassin’s Creed series were disappointed when the French company announced that no major Assassin’s Creed video game would be released in 2016, it now seems that a new entry in the series might be coming sooner than you think.

Speaking about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell movie, a representative of Asian company Catchplay (which is a co-financier for the Assassin’s Creed movie) told Variety that US producer New Regency was looking to release sequels for both movies, given the appeal and popularity of the games.

Surprisingly enough, Variety’s article also mentions that “the next version of the Assassin’s Creed video game is reported to be released in January 2017”, meaning Assassin’s Creed fans might get to play a new game in the series sooner than expected.

And while a January 2017 release for an Assassin’s Creed game might seem odd, given that new entries in the series usually come out in the Fall, other Ubisoft games like Far Cry Primal have come out in the first months of the year, while its predecessors Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 were both released in December and November respectively.

So given that a January release for an Assassin’s Creed game is not such a far-fetched thing, what can we expect from an upcoming Creed game? Although Ubisoft has not made an official announcement yet, a developer writing on condition of anonymity on the NeoGaf forums has revealed some details about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game. The game will feature a “freeform combat system” and a “Witcher feel”, which is not surprising considering how popular CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been, winning numerous accolades since it was released last year.

Will a new Assassin’s Creed game bring back the glory days of 2013’s Black Flag?

The new Assassin’s Creed game will also likely be set in Ancient Egypt and focus more on story than historical detail, and it will probably take place even before the Assassin and Templar orders came to be. The protagonist will be more like Altair of the original game than Ezio Auditore of Assassin’s Creed II (more the quiet, unassuming sort) and will probably be a “slave or ex-slave”. The main character will also have a pet eagle, which will likely serve him in the same way Takkar’s owl does in Ubisoft’s latest Far Cry game.

And given that according to the NeoGaf poster the new Assassin’s Creed game is being developed by the team behind Black Flag (and that game’s project director is currently working on an announced project according to his Twitter page, probably the new Creed game), the game is also likely to feature sailing, perhaps on Egypt’s world-famous Nile river…

Other details revealed about the future Assassin’s Creed game include the fact that this game will be more colourful than earlier entries in the series, perhaps in the vein of Ubisoft’s great 2008 Prince of Persia reboot… Although sadly the developer posting on NeoGaf also claims that a new game in the Prince of Persia series is a very unlikely thing at this point.

But still, fans of the Assassin’s Creed games have the promising movie starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons to look forward to while they wait for a future video game, which hopefully will bring back everything the millions of Assassin’s Creed fans have loved about these games to date.

Update: Variety’s article now states that a new Assassin’s Creed game will come out in 2017 (no month specified).
