If one thing is clear, is that GTA V is one of the most successful video games ever made. After its release back in 2013, fans quickly fell in love with its addictive open world gameplay, crime story and great cast of characters, with Rockstar’s game selling millions of copies and reaching the top spot in video game sales charts with ease.
GTA V was originally released for Xbox 360 and PS3, but was later ported to PS4, Xbox One and PC, and has kept selling strongly afterwards. Actually, the game has now hit another sales milestone, having shifted a whopping 85 million copies to date. This puts Rockstar’s game at number 3 in the list of all-time best-selling games, surpassing Nintendo’s Wii Sports and being only behind Minecraft and Tetris.
Of course, GTA V would still have to sell almost 40 million more copies to take Minecraft’s number 2 spot, while it obviously still has a while to go in order to dethrone Tetris, which has sold a stunning 170 million copies to date across all platforms.
But still, it’s obvious that both Rockstar and publisher Take-Two will be pleased by GTA V’s sales, and also by the fact that its multiplayer component GTA Online continues to soar. Actually, Take-Two’s boss Strauss Zelnick said that “Grand Theft Auto Online delivered its best quarter yet”, so it clearly must have made quite a bit more money than the $500 million US dollars it had grossed by April 2016.
Things are looking up for Rockstar then, while the US company is now busily working on their next blockbuster game, Red Dead Redemption 2. But will their upcoming cowboy adventure manage to outsell GTA V? This remains to be seen, although it’s clear that unless a major disaster happens Red Dead Redemption 2 will be one of 2018 biggest games, while we can also count on GTA V reaching new sales milestones in the not so distant future.
