Nier: Automata was one of the top video games of 2017, no doubt. It was also one of the most original games of that year, boasting a mix of gameplay styles and a cool sci-fi world in which androids fought alien machines for supremacy.
It seemed, though, that Nier: Automata wasn’t a game for everyone despite it getting mostly rave reviews, but it appears gamers have fully embraced Nier, as it was recently announced that the game sold over 9 million copies since release.
So said the game’s publisher Square Enix and Platinum Games (the studio behind the game) on a post on X (via PC Gamer). This includes both digital and retail sales to date.
The game, though, got off to a rough start on PC, but has been patched since then and is arguably the best version of the game now.
It makes sense then, and taking into account the game’s commercial success, that there would be an interest in a sequel for Nier: Automata, with plenty of gamers surely wanting more of the series’ action role-playing gameplay.

And there could be more android vs robots action in a new Nier game, as a sequel is a real possibility now. More so taking into account that Japanese company Square Enix said that this is “a global hit far in excess of our expectations”.
And as was recently reported on metro.co.uk, series producer Yosuke Saito said he was at work on a new project with Yoko Taro (the creator of the Nier series) and its composer Keiichi Okabe.
The man said “it might be Nier”, but also that it might not, so this is no confirmation that a sequel is in the works.
But taking into account that 2025 will see the 15th anniversary of the series there might well be something Nier-related in the pipeline, with Saito saying that “What should we do… maybe something with the next game, or developments related to that… I’ve been hearing the fans’ expectations”.
A bit vague perhaps, but taking into account what a huge hit Nier: Automata has turned out to be, Square Enix will surely want Platinum Games to get working on another Nier game. And since its now been more than seven years since that game hit the shelves, fans of the series and all those who enjoy the Nier games are likely to be getting impatient now, so here’s hoping the team at Platinum Games will be announcing a sequel in the near future.
