As with other years before it, the year 2024 has seen plenty of controversy. And there were plenty of controversies involving video games in 2024. Some of the year’s top releases led to heated discussions and accusations amongst gamers, so controversial were these video games. And without further ado, here follows a list of the top 10 video game controversies of 2024.
1. Elden Ring DLC nominated for game of the year at the Game Awards
Elden Ring sure was one of 2022 top games. Actually, it won the Game of the Year award at the 2022 Game Awards, a decision few contested that year. And FromSoftware (the people behind the game) put out a great expansion for it in 2024, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It was a great expansion for the game according to most reviewers, its 94 score on Metacritic being testament to that, but should it have been nominated for the Game of the Year award at this year’s Game Awards?
This did not make sense for some people, as it wasn’t a standalone game but an expansion that requires you to own Elden Ring before you can play it. To add insult to injury, you must have first reached a pretty high level in the game and defeated several of its fearsome bosses before you can get started with it, so it being nominated for Game of the Year when it was just an add-on to Elden Ring was controversial to say the least.
