CD Projekt, the Polish company behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has revealed that the role-playing game has sold more than 50 million copies to date, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.
The Witcher 3 was one of the biggest games of 2015, no doubt about this, featuring a great story, quests and characters, although the titular Witcher Geralt is more of a love or hate character. The game surely is a match for other genre heavyweights like Bethesda’s Skyrim, and has actually now outsold the Bethesda classic (which has shifted little more than 30 million copies to date).
The Witcher 3 has been controversial, though, having been accused of sexism due to the way female characters are depicted in the game, amongst other things. But there’s no doubt that The Witcher 3 was quite an achievement for a developer like CD Projekt Red back in 2015, even if its parent company CD Projekt is now one of the biggest video game publishers in the world.
The 50 million figure for copies sold definitely is impressive, but believe it or not The Witcher 3 is still far from being the best-selling video game to date. It is above all other RPGs released to date (even Nintendo’s Zelda games), but the likes of Microsoft’s Minecraft, which has sold a whopping 238 million copies to date, tower above. So does GTA V, the latest instalment of the world-conquering GTA series, which has sold a massive 180 million copies to this date.

But there’s no question that The Witcher 3’s sales figures are very impressive for a mature and complex role-playing game like CD Projekt’s, and CD Projekt’s success has obviously not gone unnoticed by the biggest video game companies like Sony (which recent rumors suggest might have an interest in buying the Polish outfit).
The Polish outfit has also revealed that the whole Witcher series (which includes the previous two games) has now surpassed the 75 million copies sold mark, so plenty of video game players the world over have been enjoying the adventures of titular Witcher Geralt. Plus, CD Projekt recently released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition, a new edition of the game for consoles and PC. This features a bonus quest and graphical improvements, making the game even prettier to look at on next-gen consoles and modern PCs.
The Witcher 3 won’t be Geralt’s last adventure either, as there’s another Witcher game in the works at developer CD Projekt Red right now too… Aside from this, there are also more seasons of the highly-rated Netflix series to look forward too (and clearly the TV series has helped boost the video game sales), so this is one entertainment franchise which may still have a lot to offer to fans of medieval fantasy and role-playing games in the future.
