Quite a few people in the video game industry were miffed when Bethesda announced last October that it would no longer be providing advance copies of its games to reviewers and YouTubers, and that they would only get these a day before the game’s launch. This was controversial as there would not be any in-depth reviews of the publisher’s games before launch day, meaning extra risk for video game fans who chose to buy Bethesda’s games on their release date.

But there’s still a silver lining to this, though, as it can be argued that excessive pre-game coverage can ruin player’s enjoyment of games, as the joy of discovering a game by oneself is lost, while it is true that the average player does not put much stock in video game reviews at all. But still, early reviews are useful in order to find out whether there are any major issues with the game, even if it’s true that some of Bethesda’s games like Doom and Dishonored 2 have undoubtedly been amongst the year’s best.
