5 Reasons Why Nintendo’s Wii U Console Failed

3. The controller

It is clear that the Wii U’s gamepad, which featured a touchscreen, was a great concept in practice, as it allowed games like Super Mario Maker to provide a more engaging experience, and show part of the game’s user interface on the touchscreen instead of the TV.

But in general game developers did not take advantage of it (and the recent Minecraft Wii U port is a prime example of this) and many players ended up seeing it more as a gimmick than anything else. This is a pity, as Nintendo’s single-hand controller for the earlier Wii console was intuitive and fun to use, but the Japanese company failed when it tried to innovate with the Wii U’s controller touchscreen.
