Quite a few video games have been controversial over the years, and Code Violet, an upcoming game featuring dinosaurs and a sci-fi setting, has already sparked controversy this year.
You see, the game is a PS5 exclusive, but many likely expected it to hit the PC at some point. However, the people behind the game – US studio TeamKill Media – have categorically denied the game is getting a PC version.
And the reasons given by the developer may have upset many a PC gamer, as they said they did not “want anyone modding vulgar versions of the main character” in a recent X post (via IGN).
“We hold our voice actresses and actors with high regard, as well as our artistic vision for the game and story and reject any form of destroying that with sexual mods”, added the studio.
Code Violet’s protagonist is Violet Sinclair, a woman who’s been taken away from her time and place to be used as a surrogate in a human colony from the future. She’s definitely a sexy video game character, as seen in the image which accompanies this article.
According to the game’s plot (as described by TeamKill Media):
“Earth’s last survivors, a colony known as Aion, decide they will use their technology to jump to different periods in time, extract women and bring them back to their base on Trappist 1-E to be surrogates and prevent mankind’s extinction”.
Which is all pretty silly, even by video game standards… There’s also the fact that Violet finds herself fighting dinosaurs on Aion for some reason, while she also has to deal with the facility’s mysterious director. According to TeamKill Media, their game is meant to be a spiritual successor to the Dino Crisis games of the 90’s.
As stated earlier, Code Violet is a PS5 exclusive, and will arrive on the platform this summer (in July to be exact).
It not coming to PC, and specifically the reasons given for this, has stirred controversy as previously mentioned. And it’s not clear whether vulgar or sexual mods are really the reason why the game won’t be hitting the PC platform this summer.
For starters, US studio TeamKill Media say the specialize in PlayStation games, so maybe they just want to focus on Sony’s platform at the expense of others, including the PC. Actually, when asked why the game wouldn’t be hitting the Xbox, the studio said they “don’t have the time or expertise to devote to the Xbox platform at this point in time”.
There’s also the fact that a good dose of controversy will help sell any game, especially one featuring a sexy protagonist like Code Violet does. And the studio’s earlier game, Quantum Error, a survival horror game with a firefighter protagonist, was also controversial before its launch in late 2023.
But the release of sexual mods is definitely a concern for other developers too, especially in this day and age in which any user with basic knowledge can modify any game using publicly available tools. For instance, the studio behind Final Fantasy XV, voiced its concern before the release of the game’s PC version back in 2018.
So even if Code Violet never sees the light of day on PC, here’s hoping this will turn out to be a better release than TeamKill Media’s earlier Quantum Error, a game widely panned by game critics back in 2023.
Many still remember Dino Crisis and its ilk, so if Code Violet can deliver a gaming experience anywhere close to it, many video game fans will be smiling come its release this summer, no doubt.
