Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V is proving to be quite the juggernaut, as the game has now sold a whopping 65 million copies, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time. It proves that GTA has become a cultural phenomenon, and shows how loved the franchise is by gamers the world over.
But although that 65 million figure is impressive, it seems that GTA V still has a while to go before it becomes the best-selling game of all time, as the likes of Microsoft’s Minecraft and Tetris are still ahead of Rockstar’s game when it comes to total of number of copies sold.
Minecraft has sold more than 70 million copies to date and is still going strong, while the classic puzzle game Tetris has sold more than 495 million, which is a stunning figure indeed.
Although we have to take into account that Tetris, which was released way back in 1984, has been ported to almost every single machine and device in existence, from iPhones to handhelds and home consoles, while GTA V was originally released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. An upgraded edition, which included a first-person perspective mode, was released for new-gen consoles in 2014, while PC gamers had to wait to get their hands on GTA V until 2015.
Rockstar also released the wildly successful GTA Online for GTA V that lets players compete against each other and rise to the top of Los Santos’ criminal underworld, which has made a whopping $500 million to date, something that came to light as a result of Leslie Benzies’ lawsuit against Rockstar last month.
And despite the fact that GTA V has been controversial due to its violence and also due to the game’s sexist portrayal of women according to some, it is perhaps the best game of the series and its success is well deserved, and no doubt the game is likely to keep breaking sales records in the future.
