Lucasfilm has released the first trailer for their upcoming movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first of several spin-off movies that Disney has in the pipeline. Rogue One is set before the events of the original Star Wars movie, and is directed by Gareth Edwards, who previously helmed box office hits like Godzilla.
And like 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One will also feature a strong female heroine named Jyn Erso, who is played by actress Felicity Jones. The movie’s plot deals with a group of rebels who are planning to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire, plans which fans of Star Wars know later allowed a group of pilots led by Luke Skywalker to destroy the Death Star in the classic 1977 movie…
Like J.J. Abrams The Force Awakens and the original trilogy of movies, which featured then little-known actors like Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley, the cast includes less well-known performers like Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed, although some big-name actors like Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker and Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen also feature in the movie.
Although it remains to be seen whether Gareth Edwards’ movie will match The Force Awakens for entertainment value, given that his 2014 Godzilla movie was an overly serious, slightly boring film… But perhaps this will turn out to be another great entry in the Disney era of Star Wars movies, one that will keep fans of the galactic saga happy until Episode VIII hits the screens sometime in 2017.
Note: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits the theatres in December 2016.
