Fans of first-person shooter games surely know about Serious Sam, a video game series which has been going strong since the original game launched back in 2001.

But despite the fact that the original game won several Game of the Year awards and could be considered an action classic, the latest entry in the series (Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass) only good middling reviews, with its Metacritic score standing at 68 for the PC version.

Nonetheless, and despite it not changing the formula of its predecessors in any significant way, Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass must have been an exhilarating ride for many, as it boasted the same over the top action, oversized enemies and big guns. Of course, macho protagonist Sam Stone and his smartass remarks always help make the ride more fun too…

Those wanting more Serious Sam (or perhaps looking to dive into the first-person shooter series for the first time) are in luck, as an expansion for Serious Sam 4 was recently announced by developer Croteam. This will be a standalone expansion, meaning you don’t need to own the original game in order to play it.

As the game’s title indicates, this Serious Sam entry will take place in Russia. An interesting new setting in the game could be what the developers describe as a “chilling ghost town”, while players will also be blasting hordes of enemies to kingdom come in desolate forests and the coastlines of the Artic too…

There will also be new enemies to blast to pieces here, including “some of the most advanced and intimidating creatures”, the series has seen to date according to game makers Croteam. Aside from new weapons, players will also get to ride new vehicles such as snowmobiles. The trailer below gives a taste of what to expect from this new game in the Serious Sam franchise.

The PC version of Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem will be available on Steam, but it’s not been revealed yet when the game will launch on consoles. The main game, Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, launched on PC in September 2020, but only hit consoles last December, so it may yet be a while before this standalone expansion for Serious Sam 4 hits consoles then.

Nonetheless, fans of the Serious Sam games could be in for a treat if this turns out to be as good as the best we’ve had from the first-person shooter series to date, something we’ll find out when this new Serious Sam adventure is released later this January.

Note: Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem will be released on January 25, 2022. Available on PC (Steam).
