Fans of the Mortal Kombat series were ecstatic last December, when a new Mortal Kombat game was revealed at the Game Awards.
This fighting game series has been going from strength to strength since the first game came out in 1992, with the high point of the franchise being arguably 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot. And now that a new entry is on the way, game publisher Warner Bros. recently revealed who will be voicing Sonya Blade, the iconic Mortal Kombat character who has featured in the series since the original early 90’s game.
This is none other than Ronda Rousey, the US professional wrestler who made her mark in the WWE and UFC championships. Rousey is also an Olympic medallist too, and her martial arts prowess cannot be underestimated, surely making her the ideal person to play Sonya Blade in a Mortal Kombat game.
“I’ve been a lifelong Mortal Kombat fan, and Sonya Blade was the first kick-ass, female video game character that I related to”, said Rousey. “Now I get to voice her in Mortal Kombat 11. It’s a dream come true to be a part of the Mortal Kombat franchise that I grew up playing”, added the WWE star.
Aside from Rousey, other actresses to play the Sonya Blade role include Bridgette Wilson, who did so in Paul Anderson’s film adaptation. In the games, actress Dana Lyn Baron voiced the character on two occasions, including 2011’s fantastic reboot game.
It remains to be seen, though, whether the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 will live up to the hype and turn out to be a success this year, but it’s likely Mortal Kombat fans have high hopes this will be another top-notch game in the long-running series when it debuts in April this year.
Note: Mortal Kombat 11 will be released on April 23, 2019. Available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
