Canadian developer Bioware might be better known for its popular Mass Effect video games, but they have also released several action role-playing video games set in the Star Wars universe. One such game was 2003’s Knights of the Old Republic, which is widely considered one of the best role-playing video games made to date.
Bioware also tried their hand at an online multiplayer game with Star Wars: The Old Republic, an engaging RPG set in George Lucas’ sci-fi universe, which despite being released in 2011, still has a loyal following. The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online game in the vein of Blizzard’s world-conquering World of Warcraft, but with androids, wookies and jedis, and much like the earlier Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is a fun and engaging role-playing game that can offer gamers many hours of multiplayer online gameplay.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is also one of the most expensive games ever made and was criticized at launch due to server issues, the lack of originality of the game’s quests, and the way certain characters were portrayed in the game. But The Old Republic has proven to have long-term appeal, with Bioware having released a total of five expansions for the game to date, each adding new features, characters and new Star Wars stories for players to take part in.
The latest expansion for the game is Knights of the Eternal Throne, for which Bioware has released an impressive cinematic trailer which would be worthy of any Star Wars movie. In the trailer we see a young Jedi apprentice who is strong in the Force, but eventually succumbs to the dark side, and also an action-packed lightsaber battle.
The trailer certainly has great production values, and if this upcoming expansion for The Old Republic is as good as earlier ones like last year’s Knights of the Fallen Empire, then fans of Bioware’s online multiplayer RPG will certainly have plenty to look forward to come the game’s release date this Christmas.
