3. Doom: The Dark Ages

This prequel to id Software’s 2016 Doom reboot had been a long time coming, but definitely worth the wait. Following in the footsteps of their 2020 Doom Eternal game, this one lets you play as “the Slayer”. He’s an all-powerful character who can take on the legions of Hell all by himself. The Slayer gets to use a new “shield saw” here, which can deal massive damage to the demons you’ll be facing in the game, but can obviously be also used for defense…

The game features new locations like a dark forest and ruined castles, but Doom’s adrenaline-inducing, non-stop action is still present and correct here. The atmosphere is also great, boasting a mix of Middle Ages dark fantasy and sci-fi. You also get to pilot a massive robot and punch giant demons where it hurts, and also ride a flying dragon, a nice distraction from the frenetic gunplay. This surely is one of the top games to hit shelves this year to date then, and one of the best entries in the Doom franchise too.
