CD Projekt, the Polish video game company behind role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, recently revealed that the game had sold close to 10 million copies to date, making the Witcher series of games one of the best-selling of all time.
If one thing is clear though, is that The Witcher 3 was one of the biggest games of 2015 (and this website’s overall Game of the Year too), with its great story, characters and quests, and is surely a match for other genre heavyweights like Bethesda’s Skyrim. And even if the game has been controversial due to the way it depicts female characters for instance, there’s no doubt that The Witcher 3 is quite an achievement for an independent studio like CD Projekt.
But while the 10 million figure for copies sold might seem impressive, The Witcher 3 is still far from being the best-selling video game to date. Other RPGs like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sold twice as many copies (20 million), while Microsoft’s Minecraft has sold a whopping 72 million copies to date. And the latest instalment of the world-conquering GTA series has sold a stunning 60 million copies to date, showing how big Rockstar’s GTA franchise has become.
Nonetheless, The Witcher 3’s sales figures are still impressive for a complex and mature RPG like CD Projekt’s game is, and clearly CD Projekt does not have the resources of companies like Rockstar or Electronic Arts (which was even rumoured to be buying the Polish outfit at some point).
CD Projekt also revealed that the entire Witcher series has sold 20 million copies to date, so it is clear that plenty of video game players worldwide have been enjoying the adventures of titular Witcher Geralt. And although sadly The Witcher 3 will be Geralt’s last adventure, fans of the series still have that game’s Blood and Wine expansion to look forward too, and there’s also an upcoming movie based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels in the works, which is slated for release in 2017.
