The Donkey Kong arcade games of the 80’s were some of the most popular ever made, with youngsters of the time eager to beat their top scores, playing as iconic character Mario in his struggle to beat angry gorilla Kong and rescue damsel in distress Pauline. Some really took the Donkey Kong obsession to another level, though. Players like arcade champion Billy Mitchell, who set records playing Nintendo’s classic game.
Director Seth Gordon’s documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters looks at one man’s struggle to best champion player Mitchell. This makes for a thrilling movie that’s not just about video games, but also about the nature of competition and self-improvement. And following player Steve Wiebe’s story certainly makes for an entertaining experience, especially taking into account the film’s surprising ending.
