The Mad Max movies have quite a following worldwide, so it makes sense that many are looking forward to the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the latest film in the series.

Director George Miller himself attended a screening of the movie at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was approached by gaming website gamingbible.com, with the legendary director talking about the game adaptation of Mad Max released in 2015. He apparently wasn’t pleased with it, and hopes another game that lives up to his standards is made someday as he told Gaming Bible (via PC Gamer).

“Well, we did have a videogame made when we did Fury Road. […] It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, it wasn’t in our hands, we gave all our material to a company to do it… but I’m one of those people that I’d rather not do something unless you can do it at the highest level, or at least try to make it at the highest level”, Miller said.

Miller then said he wished legendary video game designer Hideo Kojima would make a Mad Max game.

“If he [Hideo Kojima] would take it on… he’s got so much fantastic stuff in his own head that I would never ask him. But if it was someone like that who would take it on, because I couldn’t do it”.

Aussie director Miller mentioning Kojima is no coincidence, actually the Japanese game designer attended Cannes to watch the movie’s premier and chat with Miller.

Kojima had words of praise for the latest Mad Max movie and is a fan of the director, who will even appear in Kojima’s upcoming Death Stranding 2 video game. So it makes sense for Miller to want Kojima to make a Mad Max video game then…

What didn’t go down well with some, though, was Miller’s criticism of the earlier Mad Max video game. The game was made by Avalanche Studios and studio founder Christofer Sundberg got back at Miller for his words about their 2015 game on X (formerly Twitter).

“I can fill X with true stories about the development of Mad Max. It was a hell of a great game, but released in a terrible release-window, which we could not convince the publisher to do otherwise”, said Sundberg.

The Mad Max video game from 2015 was a decent open world experience, fun for the first couple of hours, but ended up becoming monotonous, it borrowing from better open world games like Far Cry 3. It has a score of 69 on review aggregator website Metacritic.

The game did release at an inopportune time as Sundberg points out: actually, it launched on the same day as Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V, but surely that’s not the only reason why it didn’t do as well sales-wise as the publisher expected, something Sundberg has rambled on about on other X posts.

Nonetheless, it would still be a great thing for Mad Max fans if Kojima ever made a game based on the films, something which may yet become a reality someday. Kojima had partnered with star director Guillermo del Toro to make a game back in 2014, but it got canceled, so hopefully he’ll be luckier is he decides to team up with George Miller to make a game in the future.
