Resident Evil 9 rumors emerge online, as Resident Evil 4 tops 9 million copies sold

The Resident Evil video game series has been going strong since its debut in 1996, and numerous games have hit the shelves since then. The survival horror series has been a hit with gamers, then, while several movies have also hit the silver screen.

So it makes sense that many are eagerly awaiting the release of the next entry in the series, Resident Evil 9, even if Capcom, the Japanese company behind the games, is yet to provide an official title for the game. Either way, this is certainly one of the most eagerly anticipated video games releasing in the near future.

Resident Evil 9 will follow in the footsteps of 2023’s Resident Evil 4 remake, which stars series’ stalwart Leon S. Kennedy, and is a fine a remake of the 2005 classic as you can imagine, garnering an impressive 93 score on Metacritic.

And rumors doing the rounds online point to Resident Evil 9 also featuring Leon S. Kennedy as protagonist, while the lovely Jill Valentine was thought to be a co-protagonist in the upcoming Resident Evil entry. Meanwhile, the locations to feature in the game seemingly included a hospital.

However, an insider who goes by the online name Dusk Golem recently shot down the “Jill being a protagonist here” rumors – it now appears Leon only will lead the next entry in the storied franchise as reported on psu.com. Also, the hospital does not seem to be a location in the game either. It being set on an island and open world gameplay do still seem to be likely possibilities though…

There’s also the fact that while the game is one of the most eagerly awaited sequels expected to release this year, it may not hit the shelves in 2025 either.

Apparently Capcom is also working on a remake of its Resident Evil Zero game (a prequel to the original 1996 game) and may have the intention of releasing both Resident Evil 9 and Zero together in 2026 to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary according to DuskGolem.

It is also a possibility, though, that Resident Evil Zero might come out in 2025 for the Nintendo Switch 2, but that makes it less likely that Resident Evil 9 hits the shelves this year too, but not an impossibility.

Nonetheless, Capcom is still basking in the glory of the Resident Evil 4 remake’s success, so it may not be in a hurry to release Resident Evil 9. Actually, the Japanese company announced early this year that the highly rated remake had sold more than 9 million copies to date. This makes Resident Evil 4 Remake the 7th best-selling game in the franchise, coming in between 1998’s Resident Evil 2 (almost 5 million copies sold) and Resident Evil 3 Remake (more than 9 million copies sold).

Of course, the game’s success makes it extremely likely that Capcom will be releasing more remakes of the Resident Evil games in the future. Aside from the aforementioned Resident Evil Zero remake (which could arrive this year or in 2026) Capcom could also be working on a remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica (the true sequel to Resident Evil 2 and not Resident Evil 3, which already got a remake). Presumably there’s also a remake of Resident Evil 5 coming. In that game protagonists Sheva Alomar and Chris Redfield fought a zombie infestation in an African country.

For now, though, it is the next mainline entry in the series, Resident Evil 9, that will be on gamer’s minds, so hopefully Capcom will provide more information about the upcoming survival horror game in the near future.
