1. Warcraft ($439 million)

This movie directed by Duncan Jones did not break the video game movie curse in the sense that it simply wasn’t loved by the critics, but it has turned out to be the top-grossing video game movie by far. This was largely thanks to audiences in China, who flocked to see Jones’ CGI-charged spectacle featuring orcs, humans and fantastical creatures in the colourful fantasy world of Azeroth. This ended with the film making more than $439 million US dollars at the box office, and becoming the biggest video game movie hit to date.
