2. Xenoblade Chronicles X

Even though it was a western role-playing game, CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3, that took top honours in 2015, this Wii U game by developer Monolith Soft proved that Japanese RPGs are alive and well, and might even give The Witcher a run for its money. Set in the alien world of Mira, to which human survivors have escaped after a lethal attack on Earth, Xenoblade Chronicles X gave players a vast open world to explore.

And not only were the sights and sounds of planet Mira beautiful, but players were never at a loss when it came to finding things to do in this alien world, from mining precious minerals to engaging dinosaur-like creatures in combat to customizing and levelling their character. And while the game’s story was only so-so, the high production values and cool Anime-style of the cutscenes made up for it, as well as the great robotic suits known as Skells, letting players experience Pacific Rim-style combat in what was certainly one of the top role-playing experiences of 2015.
