The GTA games are not known for their subtlety. Featuring lots of narcissistic violence, they are about as subtle as the Itchy and Scratchy pair that appears in The Simpsons.

In Vice City, Italian protagonist Tommy Vercetti takes over the underworld, and in the way gets to perform grand theft auto, engage in nihilistic violence, and even gets to befriend an adult movie star. And although the powers that be might object to a game like this one, the cartoon violence and humour in the game mean it’s not to be taken too seriously.

If anything, it’s the occasional racism in the game that’s a bit worrying. In one mission, a South American drug boss instructs Tommy Vercetti to “kill the Haitians”, referring to a rival gang. This had the Haitian American Foundation up in arms, and it protested against the game. Rockstar was forced to remove the line from the game, but perhaps this was a case of too much ado about nothing, given that the line was taken out of context.
