Sombra shows her skills in Overwatch’s animated short ‘Infiltration’

Few would argue that Blizzard’s Overwatch is one of the year’s top video games so far, thanks to its addictive multiplayer gameplay and its colourful roster of characters. And these are indeed some of the best designed and fun to play with characters ever seen in a video game, even if the likes of English adventurer Tracer did stir controversy before the game’s release last May.

But still, American developer Blizzard has proven once again to have the magic touch and has come up with a multiplayer game that hits all the right notes, and one that is easy to pick up and play but difficult to master, much like their superb real-time strategy game Starcraft II.

And despite the fact that Overwatch does not have a single player campaign, the game does have a rich setting and story, told through Blizzard’s spectacular animated shorts featuring the game’s colourful roster of characters. And we’ve already seen animated shorts starring Tracer and the deadly Russian sniper Widowmaker, plus another short featuring oriental duo Hanzo and Gengi, and now Blizzard’s latest animated short focuses on new character Sombra, which Blizzard revealed during this year’s Blizzcon event in Anaheim, California.

In this short we see Sombra, who is accompanied by Widowmaker and Reaper, infiltrate a mech manufacturing plant in Russia in order to take out a high-profile target… We also see that Sombra does possess some interesting powers like invisibility, and also a special ability that allows her to deploy a beacon to which she can teleport from any location, letting Sombra escape from a hairy situation near the end of the video. We also see Sombra’s devious nature, as she betrays both Reaper and Widowmaker to carry out her own agenda instead.

What is clear, though, is that this is one spectacular animated short that rivals anything Pixar or Disney could come up with, proving that Blizzard is still king of the hill when it comes to video game cinematics. And if Sombra is as cool a character to play as she looks in the video, then Overwatch players are surely in for a treat when she becomes available in the game later this month.
