3. Redfall

Redfall surely was on many a gamers’ radar this year. An open-world game set in a US town infested by vampires, featuring co-op multiplayer in the vein of Left 4 Dead. It was made by Arkane Studios too, the people behind Dishonored, so what could go wrong?

Apparently, Arkane overreached here and tried to deliver both their first open-world game and co-op multiplayer game, with Redfall failing to sastisfy on either count. Admittedly, the game’s different factions (vampires, cultists and security), and setting did look pretty intriguing in the pre-release trailers. But it all failed to gel together and deliver a satisfying experience in the way other games by Arkane such as Dishonored and the studios’ more recent Deathloop (a game of the year candidate) did. So Redfall not only goes down as one of 2023 most disappointing games, but is also one of the few duds that Arkane has ever produced.
