A Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster could be coming this year

Some would think that 2016 wasn’t a great year for the Call of Duty franchise, and it’s not so hard to see why. After all, that year’s entry in the series (Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare) was reviled by many due to its sci-fi setting. Not only this, but many fans were upset about the fact that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remaster could only be bought together with Infinite Warfare as part of the game’s Deluxe Edition.

This did not go down well with quite a few fans of Activision’s best-selling series, especially taking into account that the Modern Warfare remaster was widely praised by critics due to its great graphics and the fact it managed to stay true to the original game. The Modern Warfare remaster was eventually available standalone though, and looks to have sold quite well judging by unofficial data available on vgchartz.com.

You would expect further Call of Duty remasters to be part of Activision’s plan then, and a recent listing on Amazon Italy (which was spotted by IGN Italia) seems to confirm this. This shows an entry for PS4 and Xbox One versions of “CoD MW2 Remastered”, suggesting a Modern Warfare 2 remaster could be in the works.

The release date for the game according to this listing is April 30, which if confirmed true means we won’t have to wait that long in order to play this reworked version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Amazon Italy also lists the remaster’s price at €19.99 Euros, which translates to about $25 US dollars.

Some have doubted the authenticity of this listing though, and one Forbes contributor has pointed out the price in particular seems a bit too low for a Call of Duty remaster. After all, the Modern Warfare remaster sold for $40. But it could be that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered might be less ambitious than the earlier remaster (which featured a complete reworking of the original’s graphics), and hence the lower price. Actually, this might just be a simple HD port of the original game, something like Ubisoft is doing with Far Cry 3’s Classic Edition this year.

Also, while that April 30 date might just be a placeholder date, it is strange for Activision to release a Call of Duty remaster before May 16, which is the day of Call of Duty: Black Ops IV’s worldwide reveal. It would make more sense for Activision to announce any remaster on that date.

But while the price and release date might be wrong (or just placeholders), I do believe a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster is a very real possibility, and if it’s not released this year it will surely hit shelves at a later date. After all, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is regarded as one of the best entries in the franchise to date, and surely quite a few Call of Duty fans would love to replay this game on their PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

Modern Warfare 2 also caused quite a stir back in 2009 due to its infamous “No Russian” mission, and is often mentioned when the subject of video game violence comes up, as it has in the last few weeks as a result of the Parkland school shootings in the US. But above all, this is one of the best entries in the franchise to date according to many, and surely deserves to be discovered by a new generation of players.

So it would be a great thing if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 became a reality then, and here’s hoping we hear more from Activision about the matter in the near future.
