The Mortal Kombat series of fighting games is certainly one of the best-known and loved by gamers. The game’s trademark ultra-violent action has been delighting gamers for over 20 years, who have come to known series characters like Kitana and Johny Cage like close friends. And if one thing is clear, is that Mortal Kombat’s fatalities have become iconic in the gaming world.

Fatalities are performed at the end of the match, and allow players to finish off opponents in a brutal and bloody way. In the past these fatalities were quite hard to perform, involving all sorts of button presses, but things have gotten easier in more recent iterations of the game. But for the first time in the series, Mortal Kombat X features a crazy microtransaction known as “easy fatalities” which allows gamers to pay real money so that they can perform the fatality by pressing a mere two buttons. Is it symptomatic of modern fast-food culture that pressing more than two buttons is too much work? Never mind the fact that the game’s tutorial lets you practice those fatalities…
