A Suicide Squad game could be the next project from Batman Arkham Knight makers Rocksteady

Few would deny that British outfit Rocksteady is one of the best video game developers in the business. After all, they are behind iconic video games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and its superb sequel Batman: Arkham City, and also 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight – arguably the best entry to date in the Arkham series of video games.

So it makes sense that many were excited when news broke out a couple of years ago that Rocksteady was working on a new superhero game, with early rumors claiming that Superman could be the protagonist of Rocksteady’s next video game.

It appears, though, that this is not the case, and that the London-based dev could actually be working on a game revolving around the Suicide Squad as was recently reported on Eurogamer (via Forbes).

Evidence of this is that the domain names “SuicideSquadGame.com” and “SuicideSquadKillTheJusticeLeague.com” were registered by a company with ties to Warner in mid-June as spotted by one Resetera user, leading people to believe that these domain registrations were linked to Rocksteady’s still in development superhero game.

Well perhaps we should call it “supervillain” game instead, as if Rocksteady’s game indeed revolves around the Suicide Squad then players will be controlling iconic DC universe villains like Harley Quinn, assassin Deathshot and even the Clown Prince of Crime himself…

And given that a possible subtitle for the game is “Kill the Justice League” then maybe players get to nail Batman this time instead of hunting down criminals as the Caped Crusader like they did in Rocksteady’s earlier Batman: Arkham games, something which would be very cool indeed.

Some have pointed out at the poor box office performance of the Suicide Squad movies and suggested the game might not live up to expectations. With Rocksteady behind the project, though, it’s hard to think this will not be a great game, especially taking into account how good their Batman: Arkham games were. There’s still a possibility that the British dev might not get this one right, even if the prospect of playing as supervillains like the Joker and taking on the Justice League does seem irresistible.

However, those who would rather fight the good fight need not despair, as Warner Bros. has a new Batman game in the offing which presumably will be titled “Gotham Knights”, with the domain “GothamKnightsGame.com” seemingly having been registered by the company too. This game has been teased for a while both on Twitter and Warner’s own website, with references to the “Court of Owls”, an evil organization which has featured in the Batman comics.

This is being developed by Warner Bros. Montreal, the people behind Batman: Arkham Origins. The game is arguably the weakest instalment of the Batman: Arkham series, but I’m still hoping for Gotham Knights to be a good Batman game when it hits the shelves, something which could happen this year according to rumors.

Another detail is that both these games are being developed for next-gen consoles (and presumably PC too) as Eurogamer points out, so it’s not clear whether they will release for current-gen machines as well. This seems unlikely taking into account the huge number of PS4s and Xbox Ones out there compared to the small user base of PS5 and Xbox Series X owners there’s bound to be at the time of these games’ release dates.

Nonetheless, there’s still a possibility both Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad game and Warner Bros. Montreal’s upcoming Batman game could ship for next-gen machines only, although this is less likely of the next Batman game if it’s actually coming this year though, plus Warner’s previous Batman: Arkham games have all been multiplatform too.

Either way, there’s not much longer to wait in order to find out more about these upcoming Warner Bros. games as they’ll both be apparently showcased at the DC Fandome event this August, which is something to look forward to no doubt.
