Batman: Arkham Knight gets surprise update from Rocksteady

Back in 2015, British video game studio Rocksteady released one of that year’s best games. Batman: Arkham Knight featured great open-world gameplay, a good story and truly made players feel like the Dark Knight.

It was a worthy conclusion for Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games, and arguably the best of the lot.

It also caused a bit of controversy upon release, mainly due to its highly botched PC version (which admittedly is perfectly fine nowadays) and its surprise Mature rating. Also, some people disliked the way the Batmobile was implemented in the game and the prominence of tank combat in Knight.

Nonetheless, it’s clear Batman: Arkham Knight was one of the best games of the previous generation, and one of the select games which forms part of Sony’s PlayStation Plus Collection, which is available to PS Plus subscribers who game on PS5.

And quite a few gamers were surprised when Rocksteady Studios recently updated the game too, as Arkham Knight had not seen an update in quite some time, being the five year old game it is.

However, those still playing or yet to play Rocksteady’s superhero masterpiece will be glad to discover that two new skins for Batman will now be available to them, as was recently reported on VG247.

The Zur En Arrh and Anime outfits for Batman are now available to all players as Rocksteady announced in a tweet. These were previously only available to gamers who used the WBplay online account service.

And while no doubt this is a nice gift from Rocksteady, some may be disappointed that we haven’t seen a game from them in five years, and that they won’t be making any more open-world games starring the caped crusader either.

However, the people at WB Games Montreal are now hard at work on Gotham Knights, an open-world game which could offer many of the same thrills that Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games did. Set in the Batman universe, Gotham Knights won’t feature Batman as the lead character (which makes sense as he apparently buys the farm at the end of Batman: Arkham Knight). Instead, you’ll get to play as the likes of Nightwing, Red Hood, Robin or Batgirl.

The game has action and role-playing elements, and despite the fact that Warner Bros. has advertised the game’s co-op multiplayer, players will also be able to play the entirety of the game alone with any of the available characters.

Gotham Knights is expected to hit shelves in 2021, and if the game is as good as fans of superhero video games are hoping it will, it should tide you over until Rocksteady’s next game is out.

This will be Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and it’s expected to be out sometime in 2022. Unlike in Rocksteady’s earlier games, you won’t be fighting for truth and justice in this one. Actually, it’s a third-person shooter in which you’ll play as members of the Suicide Squad such as Harley Quinn and King Shark.

It remains to be seen, though, whether Rocksteady can recreate the magic of its Batman Arkham games here, or whether Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be a disappointment when it arrives in 2022.

For the time being, though, Rocksteady might have revived interest in 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight with the recent skins update, and this no doubt is a game anyone fond of superhero video games really should play while we wait for the studio’s upcoming projects.
