Skyrim, which was released back in 2011, featured your standard medieval fantasy story. A messianic hero, known as the “Dragonborn” had to defend the province of Skyrim from a dragon invasion and deal with the dragon god known as Alduin, while a civil war was raging between the Empire and the Nords. Its story was a bit clichéd and in the vein of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, while The Witcher 3’s story plays out like a Game of Thrones novel.
And this is to be expected given that The Witcher 3 is based on the novels of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, so the game does not feature the standard “good vs evil” story, as Sapkowski’s books are known for their “shades of grey morality”. And The Witcher 3 is not afraid to deal with adult themes, like domestic abuse and infidelity, while protagonist Geralt never hides his lust for his lover Yennefer and other women in his journey through the fantasy world of Temeria.
