One of 2018 biggest box office successes was Tomb Raider. This film based on the popular video game series made a whopping $275 million at the box office, and starred Swedish actress Alicia Vikander in the title role. Vikander played Lara Croft with gusto in what turned out to be a pretty good video game movie overall.
So those who enjoyed director Roar Uthaug’s film last year will be happy to know that another Tomb Raider movie is in the works, and will be hitting theatres on March 19, 2021 as was recently reported on Deadline.
However, this new entry in the Tomb Raider franchise won’t be directed by Norwegian director Roar Uthaug. Rather, Ben Wheatley will be sitting in the director’s chair for this upcoming film. Alicia Vikander, though, will be reprising her role as iconic video game character Lara Croft, a character she played pretty well in the 2018 movie according to most critics.
It’s great that Alicia Vikander is returning to the role then, as she proved to be a worthy successor to Angelina Jolie. The US actress had previously played Lara Croft in one not so great (and another pretty decent) Tomb Raider movie in the past, and Alicia Vikander sure lived up to her legacy. But it remains to be seen whether director Ben Wheatley (who had previously helmed films like Free Fire and Kill List) can make this new Tomb Raider movie a box office success though.
Here’s hoping he’s able to deliver another entertaining popcorn flick like 2018’s Tomb Raider, as it’s clear many fans of the Tomb Raider games and movies will be waiting for this one with bated breath, that’s for sure.
