13. Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy III was a fine RPG back in the day, but it’s been overshadowed by later entries.

Back in 1990, Final Fantasy was going from strength to strength, and III ended up being another strong entry in the series, although its more recent smartphone versions and PC port (which were based on the 2006 DS remake) do look quite dated by today’s standards.

But the game does have a good story with the typical Final Fantasy elements thrown in for good measure: the struggle between good and evil, floating continents and reluctant heroes, while the turn-based combat is still fun even if the constant random encounters and level grinding can get tedious at times. The game did have a comprehensive job system letting players customize their characters to their heart’s content, and there’s a lengthy adventure to savour here, even if more modern Final Fantasy games remind us how far the series has come since the early 90’s.
