8. Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy XII was the last game in the series released for the old PlayStation 2 console, and ended up being one of the top RPGs of the year despite facing stiff competition from the likes of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion back in 2006. Like other games in the renowned series, it also had a superb story set in the world of Ivalice, a Final Fantasy setting which had a Star Wars, sci-fi feel to it, and also a great cast of characters including airship commander Vann and the lovely princess Ashe.
Of course, the visuals and sounds were top-notch for the time, and the game also featured a revamped combat system that did away with the turn-based system of old and its random encounters, making battles a joy to play in this pretty great Final Fantasy instalment.
