6. Avowed

Ever since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim hit the shelves in 2011, fans of role-playing games have been clamoring for a similar experience. And Avowed by Obsidian Games has indeed drawn comparisons to Bethesda’s RPG masterpiece Skyrim, as it’s a first-person role-playing game set in a fantasy world, and one which seemingly will offer similar gameplay.

Avowed features exploration, combat and a plot involving a deadly plague afflicting the Living Lands, the island setting of the game. Combat lets players wield swords as seen in the image above, but magic can also be your ally as you take on the game’s numerous foes… Also, the fact you can also make use of guns in combat means this won’t be a traditional medieval fantasy world like Skyrim’s either, while the variety of locations and environments in the Living Lands (as seen in the story trailer below) could make exploration a joy when Avowed ships later this year.

Release date: November 12, 2024. Available on Xbox Series X/S and PC (also on Xbox Game Pass). Update: Avowed has been delayed, and is now releasing on February 18, 2025.
