4. Sexism in The Witcher 3

Polish studio CD Projekt Red has never shied away from making sex an integral part of their games. And their Witcher games have been lauded for dealing with mature themes, although they have also been criticized due to their portrayal of women. For example, in the original The Witcher game, players would receive erotic cards featuring the women that protagonist Geralt of Rivia gets intimate with in the game.

And anti-video game sexism activist Anita Saarkesian took aim at CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3, claiming that female characters in the game are treated in a rather sexist way. For instance, Geralt’s adoptive daughter Ciri is constantly berated by the men and receives insults like “b*tch” just because she does the kind of things that only men are expected to do in the game’s medieval fantasy setting, such as wielding a sword. But at least Ciri is an independent and strong-willed woman who can teach the men a thing or two in battle…
