It makes sense that the GTA series is wildly popular, as Rockstar Games certainly know how to create immersive open world games in which players can interact with a cast of memorable characters. And in this instalment eastern European immigrant and protagonist Nico Bellic would resort to any method to rise in the criminal underworld of Liberty City, so players had plenty of opportunities to carry out their darkest fantasies.

And like all other GTA games, IV was hugely successful and sold an untold number of copies. Rockstar certainly spared no expense in developing and marketing the game, as it cost $100 million (£65 million) overall. And it is rumoured that Paramount Pictures, fearing that people would stay at home playing GTA instead of going to the cinema, decided to move the opening weekend of the Iron Man movie to earlier in April 2008, so that it would not coincide with GTA IV’s release date…
